Birfday Otter Update 03DEC2023

HI! hugs

There are three (3) birfdays listed for this week on the Unofficial Birthday List:

  • Neigh-Lizzy will be thirty-nine on Tuesday (December 5th.)
  • Nepeta will be thirty-seven on Thursday (December 7th.) And
  • Pann will be fifty-two on Friday (December 8th.)

Many Happy Returns of your day!

And heads-up for toshiya’s birfday next Sunday (December 10th) and Veritas’s birfday next Monday (December 11th.)

On the Local Furry Events Desk, today (Sunday, December 3rd) is the day of the Mississauga Santa Claus Parade Furmeet, organized by Jinx Lynx. Gather at the corner of Dunwin Drive and Glen Erin Drive by 11:30 AM.

This Wednesday (December 6th) will be the Old Spaghetti Factory Monthly Furmeet (probably.) The last time I spoke to him, Cyrion was still doing these every month, trying to make them popular again. As usual, it will happen at the Old Spaghetti Factory, 54 The Esplanade, Toronto, 416-864-9761. Gather after 6:00 PM, sit for dinner at 6:30, and the meeting will end at 10:00. $34 should cover an average meal, with tax and a decent tip; the lowest is $18. (Always tip your server.)

Midwest Furfest is wrapping up today (Sunday, December 3rd.) There are three Furry conventions this weekend.

On the Holidays and Occasions Desk, today (Sunday, December 3rd) is Advent Sunday, the fourth Sunday before Christmas; the start of the Advent season, and preparations for the Christmas season begin today. Today is also Mauder’s Day, the Dudeist celebration of Mauder, the creative and nurturing spirit in all of us (and Julianne Moore‘s birfday.) And today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Tomorrow (Monday, December 4th) will be the Eid il-Burbara. Christians in Israel/Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Russia, Syria and Turkey celebrate the Feast of St Barbara, who went about in disguise to escape her own father (although she was finally caught.) Tomorrow will also be Slackernalia, the Dudeist tribute to the old Roman Saturnalia, (and Jeff Bridges‘ birfday.) Tomorrow will be International Cheetah Day, a celebration of the big spotty kitties who never prosper and are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. And tomorrow will be World Wildlife Conservation Day.

Tuesday (December 5th) will be the Krampusnacht, an old Austrian tradition. Krampus is the opposite of Santa Claus. He goes from house to house, punishes bad children and takes the worst ones away in a basket, never to bother anybody be seen again. (His description is… disturbingly Furry.) Tuesday will also be International Volunteer Day. Tuesday will be Walt Disney‘s Birfday; he would have been 122 years old. And Tuesday will be the Feast of St. Sabas. Sabas entered a lion’s den to pray. The lion grabbed the saint by his clothing and gently removed him. After prayers, the saint spoke to the animal, telling it the cave was big enough for both of them. The lion departed, never to return. (I guess the lion had too much pride to share.)

Wednesday (December 6th) will be the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, the anniversary of the 1989 massacre at L’École Polytechnique in Montreal. And Wednesday will be St Nicholas Day or Sinterklaas, the Christian celebration of the patron saint of *children. On this day, Santa leaves little presents in children’s shoes.

On Thursday (December 7th), Chanukah will begin at sunset; the Jewish celebration of one day’s worth of lamp oil, lasting for eight days, ends on the 15th. And Thursday will be the Feast of St. Ambrose. When Ambrose was a baby, his father found him with his face covered in bees. He took this as a sign that Ambrose would have a “honeyed tongue” (that he’d be a persuasive speaker.)

Friday (December 8th) will be the Immaculate Conception of Mary, a Christian celebration of God making Mary pregnant with Jesus without punching her V card. Friday will also be Bodhi Day, the anniversary of Prince Gautama receiving Enlightenment and becoming the Buddha (but only for Mahayana Buddhists.) And Friday will be Afflux, a Discordian holy day that only they are supposed to understand.

Saturday (December 9th) will be St. Marty’s Day, a monthly Dudeist celebration of the late Jack Kehlr, who played Marty the Landlord in “The Big Lebowski.” Saturday will also be International Day of Veterinary Medicine. And Saturday will be Anna’s Day, a celebration of Scandinavian women and girls named Anna. It’s also the day to start making the lutefisk for Christmas dinner (a terrible, awful thing to do to yummy feesh.)

And a heads-up for next Sunday (December 10th.) It will be “Festival for the Souls of Dead Whales,” Human Rights Day, the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Animal Rights Day. And next Monday (December 11th) will be the Anniversary of the Statute of Westminster.

If you want to be on the Unofficial Birthday List, or if you’d prefer to be removed or have your entry changed, email me at dotter8@gmail.com, and I’ll fix it for you promptly. I WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR REQUESTS SENT IN ANY OTHER WAY! (Requests should include the name you are or want to be entered under so that I know which “Jim Smith” to change to “Honking Camel.”) Please note that the UBL is NOT linked to the TorFur list; if you change or delete your TorFur entry, you must notify me separately. Also, it’s my policy never to add people to the UBL unless they ask to be added, changed or removed themselves. Please don’t ask for somebody else. However, you can have a Character of Significance on the list, provided you own it. (Ask me.)

Nips & cuddles,
— Dee

*Nicholas is less well known as the patron saint of sailors. We can understand why sailors don’t talk about him. Say you were part of the crew of a ship that sank at sea. Adrift in the ocean, you pull out your icon of St Nicholas and pray. Suddenly, this guy hauls you aboard a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer and flies you back to shore. Would you tell anybody? People would think you were crazy!

About D'Otter

"I'm not an otter, but I play one on the Internet!" These are the thoughts and tales of a Furry fan. Mostly, I repost my Birthday Otter Update here. I've been posting these silly things to the Toronto Furry mailing list for... oh, must be a couple of decades now! I recently decided to take it to a wider audience here on WordPress, (although I link these copies to Furry sites. I don't expect to find many fans here, even less fans from around Toronto Canada.) If you like stories, I keep mine in my "Stories" category.
