There are no other birfdays this month.

On the Local Furry Events Desk, there’s nothing major. Mepix_Cat will host a Lunch Social for Hamilton Furs on Saturday, April 27th, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. It will happen at the Electric Diner, 28 James Street North, Hamilton. (That’s at the corner of James and King William, about a block past King St E on the “east” side. It’s roughly halfway between Hamilton GO Centre and West Harbour GO, and it is walkable from either if the weather’s nice.) Expect to pay $20-30 per person. They serve a typical diner’s menu with sandwiches, burgers, etc. The meeting will be in time for brunch but too early for dinner. To RSVP, please see https://t.me/+pCS3T57PQtgzZTZh and see the pinned note.

Furry Down Under (FurDU) is wrapping up today (April 21st.) There is just one Furry convention coming this weekend.

  • Wild Nights, April 25th to 30th, Robbers Cave State Park, Wilburton, OK

On the Holidays and Occasions Desk, today (Sunday, April 21st) is a busy Sunday.

  • Today is Grounation Day for Rastafarians, the anniversary of Emperor Haile Selassie’s 1966 visit to Jamaica.
  • Today is Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday. The late queen was our sovereign longer than Victoria, whose reign we still celebrate. I do not know if there is to be an Elizabeth Day or if it will be marked with fireworks, like her great, great, great grandmother, but in my humble opinion, it ought to be (and a statutory holiday, too).
  • Today is World Creativity and Innovation Day, a UNESCO-sponsored day of awareness of creativity in the world’s economy.
  • Today is the Feast of St. Anselm. In the summer of 1097, Anslem was riding down the road when a pack of dogs chased a hare under his horse. It stayed there, and the dogs crowded around but couldn’t attack it. His companions laughed, but he scolded them and then ordered the dogs to leave the hare alone. The hare ran back to its burrow, and the dogs returned in peace to their masters.
  • Today is the beginning of Administrative Professionals’ Week, a celebration for people in the secretarial profession (secretaries, clerks, and so forth). It ends on the 27th.
  • Today is the beginning of National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week. It ends on the 27th. You, too, can save several lives (or advance science and education) by donating your bodily organs after you die. Just sign the organ donor card on the back of your driver’s license.
  • And canidae, please note that the moon will be at its fullest at 7:49 PM today. This will be the Pink Moon, so called because flowers called “pinks” usually bloom at about this time of year. It’s also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, or The Feesh Moon! (Yay, feesh! Chirp!).

Monday (April 22nd) will be busy again.

  • On Monday, Ta’anit Bechorot will begin at sunrise. This is the Jewish “Fast Of The First Born.” It celebrates God killing the firstborn children of the Egyptians but sparing all the enslaved Jews. Only the firstborn of each family observes the fast.
  • At sunset on Monday, Pesach begins; also called “Passover,” it is the Jewish celebration of their nation being freed from slavery to Egypt. (It continues until the 30th.)
  • Monday will also be Jashan of Ardwahisht or Ardavisht, the Zoroastrian celebration of Holy Fire and other luminaries.
  • Monday will be Earth Day, also known as International Mother Earth Day, an attempt to promote a movement to save the Earth.
  • Monday will be International Wildlife Film Week, the International Wildlife Film Festival week.

Tuesday (April 23rd) will be busy too.

  • On Tuesday, the Jewish Days of Omer will begin. The Omer is the period between Pesach and Shavuot, between the escape from Egypt and the giving of the Torah. These days continue until June 11th.
  • Tuesday will be St George’s Day, the patron saint of England.
  • Tuesday will be Passitover. Dudesists “borrow” the ideas of Pesach to celebrate and encourage their freedoms to flourish. (They may drink unleavened beer.)
  • Tuesday will be Hanuman Jayanti, the birthday of the Hindu monkey god.
  • Tuesday will be Canada Book Day, which is simply a celebration of Canadian books.
  • By no coincidence, Tuesday will be World Book and Copyright Day, a worldwide celebration of books and reading (and paying the author for the privilege. World Book Day is celebrated on different days in different countries. Canada celebrates the day on the date picked originally by UNESCO. )
  • Tuesday will be International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day. In a post to his Livejournal account on April 23rd, 2007, Howard V. Hendrix remarked on “webscabs” in SciFFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America), “converting the noble calling of Writer into the life of Pixel-stained Technopeasant Wretch.” In reply, Jo Watson inaugurated this awareness day to encourage professional writers (SF especially) to contribute to freely available online fiction of professional quality.
  • Tuesday will be Take Your Child to Work Day. Formerly called “Take Our Daughters* to Work Day,” that’s exactly what it is.

Wednesday (April 24th) will also be busy.

Thursday (April 25th) will be Red Hat Society Day. The Red Hat Society is a women’s social group. It was started in California in 1998 and has members in 30 countries. Thursday will also be International Girls in ICT Day to encourage girls to get involved in Information and Communications Technology and other STEM professions. Thursday will be DNA Day, a celebration of the discovery of the double helix in 1953 and the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. And Thursday will be World Penguin Day.

Friday (April 26th) will be Audubon Day, John James Audubon‘s birfday. Friday will be National Hairball Awareness Day. Brush your cat. And Friday will be the start of Arbour Week in Ontario; it ends on May 5th.

Saturday (April 27th) will be busy yet again.

  • On Saturday, the Ninth Day of Riḍván will begin at sunset. Baha’i remember the ninth day of the Baha’u’llah’s stay in the Garden of Ridvan (in Bagdad) when he invited his followers to move with him to Constantinople (now Istanbul.) Baha’i celebrate it as a family day.
  • Saturday will be International Marconi Day, the Saturday closest to April 25th, Marconi’s birfday. Amateur radio enthusiasts celebrate by going on the air and contacting each other.
  • Saturday will be International Hyena Day. Naturally, this is a celebration of hyenas.
  • Saturday will be World Veterinary Day, honouring doctors who heal animals.
  • Saturday will be Save the Frogs Day. About a third of amphibians (including frogs) are threatened with extinction.
  • Saturday will be Eeyore’s Birthday Day. This celebration of one of A.A. Milne’s characters (one of Christopher Robin Milne’s plushy friends) is held annually in Austin, TX, to raise money for charity. Come on, folks, this is a natural for the Furry fandom!

And heads-up for next Sunday (April 28th.) It will be Palm Sunday (for Orthodox Christians), National Day of Mourning, Workers Memorial Day and World Day for Safety and Health At Work. And next Monday (April 29th) will be International Dance Day.

Here’s a special heads-up for Tuesday (April 30th.) It’s the deadline for income tax. Don’t forget to file! (Although Revenue Canada probably will be okay with you filing late if you don’t owe anything, more so if you expect a return!)

If you want to be on the Unofficial Birthday List, or if you’d prefer to be removed or have your entry changed, email me at dotter8@gmail.com, and I’ll fix it for you promptly. I WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR REQUESTS SENT IN ANY OTHER WAY! (Requests should include the name you are or want to be entered under so that I know which “Jim Smith” to change to “Honking Camel. “) Please note that the UBL is NOT linked to the TorFur list; if you change or delete your TorFur entry, you must notify me separately. Also, it’s my policy never to add people to the UBL unless they ask to be added, changed or removed themselves. Please don’t ask for somebody else. However, you can have a Character of Significance on the list,
provided you own it. (Ask me.)

Nips & cuddles,
— Dee

About D'Otter

"I'm not an otter, but I play one on the Internet!" These are the thoughts and tales of a Furry fan. Mostly, I repost my Birthday Otter Update here. I've been posting these silly things to the Toronto Furry mailing list for... oh, must be a couple of decades now! I recently decided to take it to a wider audience here on WordPress, (although I link these copies to Furry sites. I don't expect to find many fans here, even less fans from around Toronto Canada.) If you like stories, I keep mine in my "Stories" category.
