Birfday Otter Update 25JUL2021

HI! hugs Sorry folks, this is the big monthly edition. But since it’s going out a little early, Happy Birfday, Totem!

There are two (2) birfdays listed for this week on the Unofficial Birthday List:

  • FireDragon will be thirty-eight on Monday (July 16th.) And
  • MacX will be forty-two on Thursday (July 29th.)

Many Happy Returns of your day!

On the Local Events Desk, there isn’t much. There’s just the Oshawa Virtual Furmeet on Friday from 9:00 PM until whenever. Always check their social media first, though, in case they cancel for some reason.

On the Holidays and Occasions Desk, today (Sunday, July 25th) is Jashan of Amurdad, a Zoroastrian festival to celebrate plants. (Well, they *are* pretty important.) And today is the Furrinalia. In Ancient Rome, Furrina was a minor goddess, the patroness of headwaters, springs, artesian wells and other places where water comes from the ground. But how can Furries ignore a goddess with a name like that? Her festival is the Furrinalia, which is always July 25th, a Sunday this year. Go do something furry!

Tomorrow (Monday, July 26th) will be Esperanto Day, the anniversary of the publication of the first book in Esperanto, Unua Libro, in 1887. Tomorrow will be International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem; mangroves are otter homes. ;-) And tomorrow will be Kitchen Sink Day, a day to celebrate anything you like that doesn’t have its own special day. This year’s randomly picked suggested topics for celebration are ransom and jackets.

On Tuesday (August 27th), nothing, in particular, will happen.

Wednesday (July 28th) will be the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval. Among Acadians in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, it observes their ancestors being expelled from the New France colonies by their English conquerors. Wednesday will also be World Hepatitis Day, which is what you think. Ad Wednesday will be Beatrix Potter‘s Birfday, the author and illustrator of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and many other children’s books featuring animal characters.

Thursday (July 29th) will be International Tiger Day; tigers are in trouble worldwide because of poaching and habitat loss. And Thursday will be Don’t Be A Dick Day; it’s Wil Wheaton’s birfday, so for one day, refrain from dick-ish behaviour.

Friday (July 30th) will be the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Friday will also be the International Day of Friendship. (Otters need their friends.) And Friday will be the start of Aurawra in Sydney, Australia; it ends on August 1st.

Saturday (July 31st) will be National Mutt Day, a celebration of mixed-breed dogs. (Thank you to elder Kliah for contributing this day.) Saturday will also be Food Day Canada to honour food grown and recipes from our home and native land. And Saturday will be the Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola. Iggy was pursuing somebody that he meant to kill. His mule steered him instead to the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Montserrat. There the saint gave up his vendetta and vowed a life of penance and devotion to God instead. (Donkeys and mules seem to represent wisdom in Christianity.)

And heads-up for next Sunday (August 1st) which will be Lughnasadh, Emancipation Day, Girl Friends Day, World Scout Scarf Day, Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs, and Super Furry Fusion , as well as the start of World Breastfeeding Week. And next Monday (August 2nd) will be Civic Holiday Monday.

August will be Gastroparesis Awareness Month and Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month in Canada. It will also be MedicAlert Awareness Month, and Psoriasis Awareness Month worldwide. Watch for canvassers.

Several Furry conventions scheduled for this month are going ahead with in-person events. So I guess this is progress? It still seems premature to me, though.

This is the last update of the month, so the complete Unofficial Birthday List is REDACTED. And if you want to be on the Unofficial Birthday List, or if you’d prefer to be removed or have your entry changed, email me at dotter8@gmail.com, and I’ll fix it for you promptly. *I WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR REQUESTS SENT IN ANY OTHER WAY!* (Requests must include the name you are or want to be entered under so that I know which “Jim Smith” to change to “Honking Camel.”) Please note that the UBL is NOT linked to the TorFur list; if you change or delete your TorFur entry, you must notify me separately. Also, it’s my policy never to add people to the UBL unless they ask to be added, changed or removed themselves. Please don’t ask for somebody else. However, you can have a Character of Significance on the list, provided that you own it. (Ask me.)

Nips & cuddles,
— Dee

* (Actually, August begins next week, but I need August 1st and 2nd for the Sunday-Monday heads-up.)

About D'Otter

"I'm not an otter, but I play one on the Internet!" These are the thoughts and tales of a Furry fan. Mostly, I repost my Birthday Otter Update here. I've been posting these silly things to the Toronto Furry mailing list for... oh, must be a couple of decades now! I recently decided to take it to a wider audience here on WordPress, (although I link these copies to Furry sites. I don't expect to find many fans here, even less fans from around Toronto Canada.) If you like stories, I keep mine in my "Stories" category.
